If you want to get the most out of your shopping experience, there are a few things to do before you begin Adding To Cart. I love online shopping as much as the next person, but shopping locally and in-person can make the experience extra special. So if you happen to be in Ann Arbor or Bay City, Michigan, be sure to stop by Ferne Boutique and tell Laura, the owner, that I said to stop in and say hello!

Before we get any further, I want to share a few tips for you to try before, during and after your shopping experience. These simple tips will help to ensure you make thoughtful purchases that elevate your wardrobe, leaving you satisfied with your choices and excited by what you have to wear.

Before Shopping:

  • Refresh and organize your existing closet: Take out and care for winter clothes, remove items you haven’t worn in the past 6 months and try on the clothes you have to make sure things fit properly. Donate items that no longer fit and flatter, or take items needing some TLC to the tailor to be hemmed and mended. Clean and polish shoes and accessories.

  • Take inventory: What items do you already have and love? Make a list of items you’d like and double check it against what you already have - do you really need multiple denim jackets? Another pair of white sneakers? Make a note of what you have to avoid spending on multiples of items you already have in your closet.

  • Do your homework: You can easily find a list of all the latest trends (here’s Vogue’s list!) but remember that not every trend is your friend! Be knowledgable about what’s trendy, but know even more about your own style personality. I highly recommend investing in color analysis so that you feel confident in choosing items in your best colors and feel knowledgable about what flatters your personal style.

During Shopping:

  • Know what you’re looking for: If you’ve done the above, this part will be a breeze! While it’s important to be open minded, you can avoid overspending by making a list of key pieces you’re looking to add to your wardrobe this season.

  • Make (and stick) to a budget: Credit card debt is so not elegant and there’s no reason to over spend season after season! You’ll feel more satisfied with your shopping if you set a spending limit and stick to it.

  • Look for quality fabrics and products: It’s better to spend more on an item that will stand the test of time than it is to load up on trendy pieces that will end up in the donation pile after a few months. Focus on natural fabrics like linen and cotton, which also tend to look and feel more luxurious.

  • Try it on: If you’re shopping in person, TRY IT ON. If you’re shopping online, try your items on as soon as they arrive and make a quick decision if it will work to avoid missing return windows. Do not settle for “ok” - you won’t wear it if it’s not comfortable and well fitted!

After Shopping:

  • Take it to the tailor: If needed, make an appointment to take any items to the tailor right away. This will ensure that the items are fitted and corrected to be as flattering as possible before the season is over.

  • Mix & Match: Take some time and have some fun introducing new items to your closet. If you are well-versed in your color season and style personality, you should be able to easily mix and match many pieces to create unique outfits you’re excited to wear.

  • Say Thank You: Whether you’ve shopped in person or online, take time to leave a positive review of the business you visited or the item you purchased.

I was thrilled when Laura, the owner of Ferne Boutique, invited me to visit the store and shop for spring! We spent a couple hours shopping and chatting about new trends and even customer etiquette! I tried on so many beautiful dresses and left with items that made me feel confident and stylish - no small feat at 36 weeks pregnant by the way!

Ferne Boutique is a contemporary women’s boutique carrying a wonderful array of items which can easily be dressed up or down depending on your style! They also carry a small selection of accessories and unique gifts. Whether you are shopping in person (Ann Arbor and Bay City, Michigan) or online, you can use code: COURTNEYO15 for 15% off your order!

There are new items coming in all the time. Here are a few of my favorite new arrivals and what I brought home myself! Shop New Arrivals and use code COURTNEYO15 at checkout!

Post baby, I’ll be back to shop for more but here’s what I brought home:

  • The Berlin Dress (Steve Madden): The athletic fabric paired with the ladylike cut was more than I could resist! The center zip will also ensure it’s breast feeding friendly. I know I’ll be spending a lot of time at the soccer field watching my two older children practice and play - this dress will ensure I feel put together!

  • Knitted Sweater Jacket (Sanctuary): The classic cut, the black & stone stripes… It was an immediate YES the minute I laid eyes on it. I’ve already worn it several times and it’s the perfect weight to layer over tank tops and blouses. Truly seasonless and one item I know I’ll be reaching for time and time again.

  • Navy Tiered Maxi Dress (Similar): This dress is bump friendly and one that I know will help me feel elegant and at ease as I transition through the final weeks of my pregnancy and into the newborn daze. I’ve already paired it with a blazer for work and have worn it to church. It can be easily dressed up or down while looking elegant and at ease.

Thank you for joining me and shopping for Spring at Ferne Boutique! Remember to use code COURTNEYO15 for extra savings during your spring shopping extravaganza and whenever you can - shop small and shop local!
