Umbrella Etiquette Tips to Remember:
When holding your umbrella, always keep it upright with the tip pointing toward the sky. Be careful not to let the umbrella tilt back and rest on your shoulder, as you could unknowingly poke someone behind you!
Avoid spinning or swaying the umbrella while you walk, whether it is folded and wrapped or open.
Gently lift your umbrella to pass others, or step to the side, so that your umbrella does not interfere with the other person’s line of vision. Offering a pleasant smile and a nod as you pass is always a polite thing to do!
Allow those without an umbrella to walk under an awning where available.
When closing your umbrella, refrain from shaking off excess water. Instead, point the umbrella down, partially closed and tap the excess water off the umbrella.
Always utilize an umbrella stand or bag when offered upon entering a building - do your best to refrain from hanging wet (or dry) umbrellas on the back of a chair.
