Challenging winter weather is on its way to many parts of the United States so what better time than now to refresh our minds with winter weather etiquette tips and elegant reminders to help us navigate the storms with ease and grace.

Here in Michigan, we’ve been experiencing a rather mild winter, so the impending storms will be our first taste of winter weather. Of course, we have so far received nothing more than a dusting, but more snow is likely on the way.

Despite spending my entire life so far living in the Midwest, the winter weather seems to come as a surprise each year. It continues to inspire and frustrate, bringing both opportunity for wonder and awe as well as treacherous travel, delays and unexpected surprises.

In my quest for living a more elegant life, I’ve challenged myself to embrace the winter season and find the beauty this special time of year holds.

Warm herbal teas, cozy days inside, cashmere wraps and keeping myself busy with cross stitch projects have all become things I look forward to, knowing that soon the snow will melt and other pursuits and pleasures will call my name.

Winter Weather Etiquette Tips & Elegant Reminders

  1. Give yourself extra time... Traffic of all types tends to slow down in adverse winter weather. Plan ahead and give yourself extra time to get where you need to go.

  2. ...and extend grace to others. Have patience with delays and cancellations. Commutes can vary and all experiences are not the same. Extend grace to those who are late and if you will be late, notify the person as soon as possible.

  3. Pay attention to local closures and delays. A good rule of thumb is to follow suite with local schools. If schools are closed, opt to work from home and plan to stay off the roads for the day.

  4. Clear and salt personal driveways, sidewalks and porches. This is not only a courtesy but a safety measure. Clear and salt pathways in a timely manner and if possible, help a neighbor who might not be able to do it on their own.

  5. Leave the porch light on. During the dark days of winter, remember to leave a porch light on in the afternoon, especially if you’re expecting guests or deliveries.

  6. Stay cozy & stylish. Now is the perfect time to relish in your favorite cashmere sweater and wool socks. It’s possible to still look polished despite the weather. Opt for cheery colors, cozy knits and have some fun!

  7. Remember to hydrate from the inside out. You may tend to drink less water in cold weather, but your mind and body need to stay hydrated! Sip on warm water with lemon, herbal teas and add hydration products to your skin care routine. Check out my favorite hydrating beauty products you can get on Amazon Prime!

  8. Keep a positive attitude. The long, dark days of winter paired with challenging weather can leave anyone feeling down. Remember to take care of yourself, find a simple hobby to enjoy and seek out the beauty of the season.
