Memorial Day weekend often signals the unofficial start of summer with many pool clubs opening up their gates for the season. Here in the midwest, that means we have three months to relish in the sun, splash in the pool and enjoy these fleeting moments of summer fun before it’s time to go back to school and prepare for the colder months ahead.

Whether you enjoy basking pool side at a country club, swimming with your children at the neighborhood pool, or visit the lake each weekend, choosing swimwear that is comfortable can be tricky!

Finding swimwear that makes you feel confident is paramount to achieving that feeling of casual elegance. It may feel impossible, but I promise you it’s not! There are so many elegant options out there, you just need to know what you’re look for and where to find it.

It’s important to know what you’re looking for when shopping for swimwear that will leave you feeling confident and elegant at the pool. When you’re shopping, keep these tips in mind:

  1. Shop for your body shape: Understand your body shape and what cuts will look best on you. Do you like to accentuate your waist? Look for a wrap or ruched style that will highlight it. Prefer to cover your bottom? Look for a full coverage or a retro-style boy cut bottom. Knowing what styles will best suit your figure will help you cut out the noise and refine your search.

  2. Know your best color: Black is often the go-to color when it comes to swimwear because many people believe it to be slimming. However, black might not be the best color for everyone! When it comes to swimwear, understanding your color season and what colors look best on you will help you find a swimsuit that brightens your face and complements your skin tone. Long story short - don’t be afraid of color, DO figure out what colors suit you best.

  3. Coordinate your coverup: Don’t leave your coverup as an afterthought! Instead, be intentional in coordinating your coverup with your swimsuit. Lean into your personal style and choose a coverup that can take you from the pool deck to the pool bar without a problem.

  4. Amplify with accessories: A chic pair of sunglasses and/or a stylish hat can instantly elevate your poolside look. Have some fun here and go for a large hat or fun pair of sunglasses you might not normally wear out and about. There’s something about the relaxed nature of being by the water that encourages one to step outside their comfort zone, even if just for the afternoon.

  5. Be smart about makeup and skin care: Rule #1: ALWAYS WEAR SPF! There is nothing chic or comfortable about a sun burn! After you’ve applied SPF, be mindful about your makeup. Opt for waterproof mascara and a lip gloss or balm with an SPF. Keep fingers and toes well manicured and opt for sleek ponytail or chignon to keep your hair looking chic.

[Everyday Elegance] Pool Club Edit #1: Flirty & Feminine

This look is guaranteed to turn heads for all the right reasons. The ruffle edging is sweet and feminine while the v-neck cut shows off just the right amount of décolletage. Paired with the long skirt, and as its name suggests, you will easily move from beach to brunch without so much as a blink of the eye. Classic sunglasses and chic slides complement the look while a bright red or pink lip will add just the right amount of color.

[Everyday Elegance] Pool Club Edit #2: Chic & Sporty

After joining the neighborhood pool, I quickly learned there is nothing less elegant than feeling nearly naked while running into the rest of the PTO Board. Personally, I love this ruched skirt made of swim material that allows me to feel covered up and stylish while chasing my kids and catching up with the other parents on the pool deck.

[Everyday Elegance] Pool Club Edit #3: Classic & Colorful

As I mentioned before, dare to try something new and don’t shy away from color! The key is to know what colors suit you best and go from there. A bright colored swimsuit will no doubt bring a smile to your face and complement the sunny, summery vibes at the pool. Pair it with a classic linen coverup and fun shades for an elegant look.

Of course, it wouldn’t be an etiquette blog without a few gentle reminders of good manners to remember while enjoying the pool. It’s one thing to look elegant, but as you certainly know, true elegance comes from the way we treat ourselves and others.

How do YOU feel when you’re getting ready to head to the pool? I hope these tips help you to feel confident, comfortable and elegant so that you can truly enjoy the beautiful summer days ahead.
